It is worthwhile to get an Information Technology degree?

Almost every business, big or small needs IT people. Some common jobs associaetd with Information Technology include Information security analyst and Database administrators. From your point of view, is it worthwhile to get an Information Technology degree or is the market already too saturated? And, how would this degree differ from a Computer Science degree?

There is some overlap between computer science and IT. Computer science focuses on the theory behind computation systems, while Information technology is more about the application of technology. IT is probably more practical than computer science as with computer science, more focus is put onto the mathematics side. IT degrees aren’t as good as they used to be due to the popularity and since computer science and IT degrees can land onto similar jobs, the competition is also a lot higher. However, it is still a very respectable degree and I think it is still worth it as lots of companies are still seeking IT graduates.

I think the hype for the degree has slowed down. And with the hype gone, you can see that there is not much value out of the degree. You can still earn some good money with specific IT skills. Development and the project management earns a lot these days. And one can surely consider this degree for long term future. I personally think that there is still few years left for this degree.

I work in the IT department of the biggest bank in our country. Our department has more than 1,000 employees so you can imagine the turnover, some are resigning and some are hired. Getting an IT degree makes you a qualified candidate for our entry level. In fact, I am currently interviewing for some vacant positions because of the quick turnover. We usually give priority to newly graduates for the entry level positions because they are given low salary for a start.
